How do you engage a community in finding the cure for HIV?

Feature an emcee. Add live music. Invite a painter. Make the audience part of the process.

What began as The Experiment, a public health and community engagement presentation with UNC Global Public Health and 2BeatHIV, became Be Connected Durham. December 14 is now HIV Cure Research Day in the City of Durham.

Angel Iset /eye seht/ Dozier, creative and cultural strategist, teaching artist, and systems designer, has cultivated her practice as a K-12 educator, conceptual artist, curator, and urban planner since 2014. After helping build curriculum for the authentic storytelling of Michael Brown's death at the inaugural Black Lives Matter national convening in Ferguson, she came home committed to policy, programs, and cultural experiences that help Black, Indigenous, and People of Color move through trauma as root medicine.

Community begins with recognition.

Walking to an appointment in historic Hayti, I approached a corner and saw a group gathered there. My first instinct was fear. Then something shifted. These were people no different than myself.

“Hey sweetie.”

In a matter of seconds, fear dissolved into recognition. I was not encountering strangers. I was encountering community. What would happen if public engagement began with relationship instead of extraction?

Storytelling fosters remembrance. Art is infrastructure. Connection is medicine.

The Be Connected Method

03 · The Be Connected Method

People are wisdom to be engaged.

Built through lived experience in Durham, the Be Connected Method is designed to be replicated or customized for any community of people but points toward improving rural communities that do not have access to the same set of resources as they would in a city. I hold the values of rural communities in high regard; therefore, my underlying goal is to transform systems, access, and opportunity within the fractals of community.

The Be Connected Method is proven. It is an artistically prescriptive concept design method called space programming, rooted in the golden era of Hip Hop. Hip Hop is the only genre of music performed around the world. With it, all other genres of music go. Our stories, then, are told with the honesty and dignity Hip Hop's vast frame of reference allows for - the customization of the ethers based in our own environments or origin. The ethers remind us of our similarities and distinctions. And that is what my work at Iset Excelsior dba Be Connected Durham does. I am ether and origin. My work influences the masses and permeates the environment wherever I am. Because somebody almost walked off wid alla my stuff, I am bringing my work back to its Source. For The Record. These are the ways to work with me or license my replicable models which are now protected as trade secrets.

The strategy was modeled to campaign for Wheels Family Fun Center to become a city-operated recreation initiative and to rename Hoover Rd. Athletic Park to Merrick Moore Community Park, since Merrick Moore was the only historic neighborhood without a park.
